Are you not sure what you’re really looking for? That’s all good we’re here to help! There are some basics that you’ll want to know about water-pipes to make the best bong buying decision.
So what is a water-pipe or bong? Simply put, it’s a pipe that uses water filtration to help cool and lubricate your smoke. There are many kinds of water-pipes but we’ll break them down into three basic categories:
Bubblers, which are smaller water-pipes that are meant to be a mix between a traditional dry pipe design with the addition of a water filtration chamber.
Bongs, which can range from tiny to the size of a full grown adult human! These are traditionally used for dried legal herbs.
- Dab Rigs, which are a lot like bongs, but tend to be smaller and designed with concentrate usage in mind.
So, to quote Confucius “All rigs are water-pipes, but not all water-pipes are rigs”. Basically that means that rigs are designed specifically for dabbing. While you could use the same piece for flower by using a glass herb bowl, the percolators, size and function are attuned to a concentrate experience. Terpene heavy concentrates do not like too much percolation or exposure to air, so dab rigs tend to be smaller, less intensive with bubble style percolation and lean towards designs like recyclers, incyclers and bang hangers. This doesn’t mean that there isn’t a vast variety of designs for rigs, because there are. It’s actually incredibly vast, but we’re talking about the basics.
Bongs or traditional water-pipes tend to be larger, although some prefer a smaller piece to a bigger one. The key here is you’ll be smoking herbs through this, so you’ll have very hot smoke coming into the piece. This is where a larger bong shines! The larger bong with a solid percolator system will force the smoke to travel farther, and depending on the speed/intensity of how you draw, you can drastically cool down your smoke. Furthermore, you can use these larger pieces for dabbing, it’s awesome, you just lose out on some flavor. These are the OG and we have a HUGE selection of them. Traditional styles include beaker shapes, straight tubes, and perc heavy versions of both that feature matrix percs, honeycombs, turbine discs, showerheads and more!
Bubblers are basically smaller versions of water-pipes, kind of like a cross between a traditional dry pipe and a water pipe. Many versions have the loading chamber crafted into the piece like a spoon pipe, others have a removable bowl like a water pipe, both deliver a slightly different experience. For those that want some water percolation, but want a small piece, these are perfect. They aren’t as popular as they once were in the 90’s but they are making a strong come back. We have a specially curated selection of these that really rip and look dope AF too.
So, I see you scratching your head and looking a little confused. All good… What did we miss? Ahhhh! Percolators! Right! We kept saying that word and you’re like… Dudes, what the fuck are you talking about, making coffee?! No! Percolators or percs in respect to bongs, water pipes and rigs have to do with downstems and other glass aparati that are built into the pieces. These are what create the bubbles and airflow movement within the pipes. There are some common ones that we’ll outline, but just like types of pipe styles, there are a myriad of different percs out there.
Honeycomb: A small disc with machined holes made to exacting size, resembling a honeycomb in a bees hive. These deliver great percolation, fit in most pipes and are frequently used in conjunction with other percolators.
Turbine Disc: A small sic with machined grooves, usually 3 to 4 cut on an angle. They are cut to force the water to spin in a cyclonic fashion, thus the turbine name. The curving of the smoke can help it travel a farther distance in a shorter piece. Everytime that smoke does a 360° spin it’s doubling it’s travel path which will make it much cooler.
Tree Arm: Tree arms are small glass arms with slits on them, usually between 3-10 slits attached to a larger dome with an uptake arm going through the middle into the main chamber of the piece. These are still very popular as they create a massive amount of percolation. On a tree arm perc you’ll usually see anywhere from 6 - 12 arms.
Showerhead/UFO/Pirelli : These are essentially a tire/dome shaped percolator that has slits running around the outside of the glass. This creates diffusion 360° through the percolator, these are the most popular percolators currently being used. Though they have many names, in function, these all do the same thing.
Matrix: Believe it or not, a matrix is just two showerheads built on top of each other. There isn’t much difference between these and a normal showerhead style percolator. In fact, most matrix percs only have one row that’s actually blowing bubbles, but the top row does add a little bit of restriction which a lot of smokers and dabbers really like. We personally love these percs as they are beautiful. Definitely need ISO alcohol and very finely milled salt to clean them well!
Natural Perc: Natural percs are either a hole at the end of a downstem or holes in general. They create bubbles and are the most basic type of percolator. They do a good job in beakers, straight tubes and are legendary for their use in dab rigs. Since they don’t create a massive amount of bubbles or airflow movement, they are better attuned to dab rigs and the concentrate experience.
Downstems: Downstems are either removable or fixed, however in this instance we’re talking about removable. Downstems like this are found only in 45° joints on pipes, most commonly beakers and straight tubes. One end of the downstem holds the blow for your herbs, the other has a percolator on it. Many have a natural or one perc hole, while others have 4 hole natural percs for more bubbles and water movement. Manufacturers like Marley Natural and others use showerheads at the end of their downstems to provide more percolation, while Nice Glass has Tree Arm Style appendages on some of their designs. You can check these out in our water pipe accessories section.
Ash Catchers: Ash catchers are glass attachments that have percolators built into them. They attach to a full size bong or rig and cannot be used without them. They not only help create more percolation, but ash and debris is catched in it first, leaving your main piece cleaner. They are a win win and we love these! Been using them for 25 years!
